My summer readings and Giveaway Winner!

I had been reading a lot lately. I just finished Eat, Pray, Love: One Woman's Search for Everything Across Italy, India and Indonesia by Elizabeth Gilbert. This book is about the author journey leaving behind all the trappings of American success (marriage, house in the country, career) and find, instead, what she truly wanted from life. It was a good book, very educational. She takes you to different places and talks about their culture and history. The only thing bad I found is that, is not engaging. I could close the book and forget I was even reading it for weeks. When you read it you’re like “ok this is nice” but that’s about it. Not much intrigue or humor. It’s a more mature book than what I usually read.

I also finished Can You Keep a Secret? by Sophie Kinsella. This one is about a free spirit girl, Emma, who spills all her secrets to a handsome stranger in a plane after thinking she’s going to die. Or at least, she thought he was a stranger. But next Monday morning, Emma's office is abuzz for the arrival of Jack Harper, the company's elusive CEO. When all the sudden Emma is in front of the stranger from the plane, a man who knows every single humiliating detail about her. It was very refreshing and light to read, my kind of reading. The story was exciting and when you think anything can’t get any worse, it does. I couldn’t stop reading so I finished it in two days. It was awfully funny and I think all girls can relate to Emma, the main character. After all, everyone got secrets.

My next reading will be Dirty by Megan Hart. Do you remember a Friends episode that Joey discovers Rachel’s erotic novel? Well yes, it’s an erotic novel. Some of my friends are into them so why not give it a try? LOL I will let you know how it goes.

Now, I made a spreadsheet on Excel with all the entries and went to Random.org where they chose an unbiased number. Without further due, the winner of my first giveaway is:

winner1

Congrats! Please email me at info@nycislandgal.com with your mailing address so I can send you your fabulous prize.

If you didn’t win, don’t worry I have schedule another amazing giveaway for tomorrow! ;)

Aw! I started a book club on Facebook and "Eat, Pray, Love" was chosen as our selection for July. I'm very excited about reading it before the movie comes out. Right now, we're reading "Heart of the Matter" by Emily Giffin. VERY good so far! I recommend it, at least up until Chapter 12 (as far as I've gotten!).

I have heard the same thing from many different people about Eat, Pray, Love so I've never considered reading it. However, have you seen previews for the movie?? It looks soooo good! Of course I am sure a lot of that has to do with Julia Roberts, James Franco, and Javier Bardem (swooon).
Can You Keep a Secret seems like a great summer read! I'm definitely going to put it on my list.
Thanks so much for stopping by my blog recently. I am so glad you like it. I really look forward to hearing all about your New York adventures.

I agree with Eat, Pray Love. Not very engaging at all. I also found her to be a little self-centered at times. Preachy? Is that the word? Anyway, I'll watch the movie, and probably be disappointed.

I am so glad to hear that there are others who disliked Eat, Pray, Love as much as I did. For awhile there I heard nothing but praise from my friends.

A woman leaves her husband and her life to "find herself." And the result? A new man was her key to self fulfillment and happiness? My feminist heart broke.

I actually started the book club myself, but it's open to the public if you want to check it out! On Facebook, search "Second Saturday Book Club." We've just gotten started this month. I think you'd like it. I've promised to update the discussion tab for those that want to join, but can't physically make it to the book club gatherings. That way everybody can chime in!

If you decide you like the erotic novel you should check out Donna Kauffman. She's more chick lit, not really erotic, but her sex scenes in her books are HOT. I've been plowing through her books and totally loving them.

Stopping by from 20sb!

I love all of Sophie Kinsella's books. Have you read the books under her pseudonym, Madeline Wickham? Those are great too.

I'm stopping by from SITS to welcome you to the group. Your blog is super cute. I'll be back. :)

I read Eat, Pray, Love last year and liked it so much more than I thought I would! I was expecting it to be some stereotypical woman-coming-of-age book since it had such mass-appeal but I ended up loving it.

I've read every Shopaholic book except the last one, but I've been wanting to give Can You Keep a Secret a try. Thanks for the recommending it; I'm adding it to my reading list!
