Lately I’ve been having some conflicts with my soon-to-be roommate (part 1 here). First, we talked about the dates that I should go to NYC for apartment hunting and agreed with August 21. We thought if we went within the first weeks maybe the landlords would make us pay at least half of the month of August and we don’t have budget for that. (I plan to move in by September.) Recently she spoke with some company her firm provided and they say we were pushing it, so now she wants to go somewhere between the first and the second week for apartment hunting. I try changing my flights but I bought them via Priceline.com so the one flight is from Delta and the other one is from American Airlines. They each charge $100 for changing the dates. That’s $200! It is completely unreasonable that I pay that amount. I mean that’s ¾ of another plane ticket. She suggested going herself the second week to search first but I already made the expense of the plane tickets so I don’t want to waste them on some pointless silly trip to NYC just because I already bought them. What am I going to do if she persists on going first and then she finds one?
I sure I can find an apartment anytime of the month and I told her to stop freaking out but she keeps at it and get a bit temperamental. She keeps insisting in what-if I don’t find an apartment. I made my plans and I’m sticking with them! I already told my cousin and she took the week of from work to help me. I can just bail like that and on top of that loose hard saved money. Sometimes I wished I could just find a nice budget-friendly studio for myself and avoid all this drama.
Any suggestions?
On a happier note, I made a spreadsheet on Excel with all the entries and went to Random.org where they chose an unbiased number. The winner chosen was not a follower! I’m so sorry T but I must stick to the giveaway rule of “followers only”! So I had to do a second selection of the winner. Wait? The second chosen was not a follower either! Sorry Jenny. This isn’t my lucky day... (here is proof)

What date do you plan on moving in? Do you have a real estate agent or are you looking by yourself? I don;t think it is realistic if you think you will find an apartment and move right in, but I don't think the date really matters. I have moved in and out of NYC apartments a ton of times, so e-mail me if you need help.

Ooooh that stinks! Next time I'll be sure to read the rules :)
Can't you cancel your flight with Delta and then have a credit to use for the next time you need to fly?
I'm going to be in NYC somewhere around August 30-September 2 to move my daughter back into her dorm for her sophomore year at NYU. Wanna meet for drinks?
Following you from Tag-Along Tuesday. Please drop by my blog at http://www.cookiesandclogs.com too!
Congratulations to Melissa..!
If finding an apartment in NYC is difficult then you have to look for one ahead of time but if the the situation is otherwise, then you don't have anything to worry about. YOu don't have to spend a lot of hard saved money by acting instantly. I think you should ask some advice from those who have an experience finding an apartment in NYC.
I'd have to say that if you guys agreed to go later and she was well aware that you were purchasing the tickets thats her problem. You guys agreed on a date and now she'll just have to stick with it.
I think your right there is always apartments for rent you guys just might not get the nicest one or the closest one. I'm sure you'll find something.
Have you tried researching on the internet? apartmentguide.com and all those sites. You could even try craigslist for the area you'll be living. You can look for an apartment and then contact them let them know that you'll be coming later in August and that you would like to see the apartment.
Good Luck!
Hooray, thanks so much for this prize -- I just saw your comment and emailed you with a thank you. Also, good luck with the apartment stuff -- things like that always end up working out well ultimately!
I'm sorry about your roommate problems! Maybe you could look at some locations online and have your roommate check those out if she goes without you.

Hi! Thanks for becoming a follower! I now have 2.. woo hoo!
Like your blog though, I'm a follower now!
Thanks for dropping by my dear, I love meeting more (soon to be) New Yorkers!
The roommate situation is sticky but best of luck on the apt. search. Do you know people there? I find one of the best ways to apt. hunt is to get recs from friends.
To be honest, if NYC is anything like Boston, you may be pushing it. I'm sure you'll find something, just know that the units that are most desirable and often the ones that are priced best, get snatched up as soon as they go up for rent, which is usually one to two months before the lease ends (most leases have a clause in them saying when the landlord may start showing the property if the current tenants choose not to renew by that date).
Just keep those things in mind, and good luck!
I'm sending you this link to DSA real estate. It's my uncles company, but he owns a ton of studios all over the city. He let me live in one downtown for free a couple summers ago. They are really well priced so I would check it out!

Finding an apartment is easy. Finding the one you want is hard. No, but on a more serious note, I've found that trying to find an apartment weeks in advance does not work as well as trying to find an apartment close to the time when you want it. As counterproductive as that sounds, almost every time I tried to get a place some weeks in advance there was an issue because the landlord and/or the current occupant was hoping for an immediate move-in.
